Frequently Asked Questions – Products

What is a wax melt?

A wax melt is like a candle just without the wick. Wax melts are used to bring fragrances to a space and the best bit is you can quickly change them over to suit your mood. By heating the wax from underneath you are able to achieve a strong scent throw that is even and steady.

How do you use a wax melt?

Using wax melts is super easy. We have researched the common issues and designed a unique melt that minimises handling and mess. Simply pop your melt out of the box and place it in the bowl/dish of your wax burner/melter. Either switch on your electric burner or light a four hour tealight underneath the bowl. Gradually the heat will reach the bowl and melt the wax, this will then release your chosen fragrance.

What type of wax does Mason Grant use?

We use bio-degradable soy wax for our wax melts. We have carried out extensive testing and found that soy wax was best suited to our products. There are a lot of industry discussions on the environmental impact of different types of waxes, rest assured though, we research extensively so we can make informed decisions and select only the best materials to align with our sustainability ethos.

How long will the wax melt release the scent for?

Mason Grant wax melts will produce approx. 20 hours of fragrance each melt. As our products are made of natural waxes and hand poured this may vary slightly. The average candle burns between 20-40 hours so when it comes to value, wax melts are a really economical way to fragrance your home. Our melts have also been designed to snap in half easily so you can melt them in multiple rooms or have a softer fragrance throw.

What type of wax burner/melter should I use?

Throughout our testing processes we trial our wax melts in various styles of wax burners/melters to ensure they perform well. Ultimately the style of burner will have an impact on how the fragrance is released. Electric burners tend to heat the wax at a lower temperature, meaning your scent will be softer and last longer. Tea light burners can vary greatly in size and design, some people use oil burners to melt wax which isn’t ideal. Oil burners are designed to sit closer to the flame to heat the oil to greater temperatures, we don’t need our melts to get this hot. When oil burners are used with wax melts it can cause the wax to become too hot and crack the bowl.

When purchasing a tea light burner you need to look for designs that are around 10cm tall. Make sure the bowl sits approx. 7cm away from the flame as this will ensure the wax will get warm enough to emit fragrance but not too hot that the scent burns off too quickly. We strongly recommend only using four hour tealights.

Always follow the burner/melters manufacturers’ guidelines and never leave a naked flame unattended. It’s also good practice to check your burner regularly for cracks or imperfections.

How do I remove the spent wax?

Once your wax melt has given off the last of its fragrance it’s time to clean out the bowl. First things first, never pour wax down the drain. The two ways that are the most effective and the safest are:

  • Cotton wool – while your wax is still warm place a couple of cotton wool balls into the bowl/dish. The wax will soak into the cotton wool and can be removed safely and disposed of.
  • Freeze it – once your wax has cooled completely you can pop the dish/bowl into the freezer for around 10 minutes. The wax should then easily pop out of the bowl.

Keep a look out on our Lifestyle Blog for some really handy tips on how you can get even more use out of your wax melts once their fragrance has been spent.

Where can I find allergy information?

All of our packaging conforms to CLP regulations and states potential allergens clearly. You can also Click Here to read more or if your answer isn’t here just Contact Us where we will happily answer any of your questions.

Why is there vapour rising from the melt pool?

Sometimes you might see a vapour rising from the melt pool, this is completely normal and is the wax melt releasing its fragrance. If you’re finding this is happening regularly and that your fragrance isn’t lasting as long as you hoped it may be worth reading our recommendations above on which burner to use.

How do I store my wax melts?

Wax melts need to be stored in a cool dry place, out of reach of children and pets. By their very nature, if they get too warm, they will melt so keep out of direct sunlight. If you are not a frequent user of wax melts it may be worth removing your melts from the box and storing them in a glass jar, this will ensure you get maximum longevity from the melts. Do not mix different fragrances together and always retain the original packaging for reference.

Can I melt different wax melts together?

Some companies actively encourage the mixing of different scented wax melts, but as far as Mason Grant is concerned this is a big no no. Fragrance oils go through extensive testing by industry experts to ensure they are as safe as possible and compliant to all regulations. By mixing two or more melts together you can change the make up of the melt pool and how the different ingredients react with each other. We therefore advise only burning one fragrance in a burner/melter at any one time. You can however use two burners in the same room to create your own variety of scent combinations.

I'm a vegan, are Mason Grant wax melts for me?

They certainly are. Our wax melts contain no animal or animal by products and are 100% cruelty free.

Are Mason Grant products tested on animals?

Absolutely not. In the world we live in there are so many alternatives to testing on animals. This makes the process of testing on animals entirely unnecessary and cruel. We owe it to all animals to ensure our supply chain stays 100% cruelty free and this is something that will never change.

How do I recycle my used packaging?

We have developed our packaging to be fully recyclable. Once you have finished the last of your melts the box can be popped in your recycling bin alongside other cardboard rubbish. You can also remove the insert of our six pack melts and retain the box for storage. For our collection boxes your wax melts come in individual glassine bags, these can be put in with compostable waste or on your compost heap.

Are Mason Grant wax melts pet safe?

Mason Grant wax melts are made from non-toxic soy wax and never exceed the legal safety levels for fragrance oils. However, just like humans, pets are all different and what may be perfectly fine around some pets, may be an irritant for another. We therefore advise checking out our Ingredients and Allergens page and taking your own pet’s health and needs into consideration. It’s worth noting that additives such as dyes can cause physical sickness in animals if ingested, which is another reason why we don’t use dyes in our wax melts.

Always allow your pet to leave an area where a wax melt is being melted, just like us, we all like/dislike different scents and the same applies to our pets. Never melt a wax melt over your pets eating/drinking area.

We always advise storing and using wax melts out of reach of children and animals and never leave a naked flame unattended. If your pet ingests a wax melt the first thing to do is remove any wax from their mouth, monitor your pet to see if they are lethargic or in distress, if there are any signs of illness it is always best to contact your vet for advice. Ensure you retain our packaging for reference and of course if any further information is needed don’t hesitate to Contact Us.
